Alyssa King joined the Division of Community Engagement in February 2016 as a program specialist for the Mary and Frances Youth Center. She assists in coordinating the Discovery program and is responsible for the management of the Safety and Protection of Minors (SPM) Policy on campus. She works with departments, faculty and staff across campus to provide rising middle school students with an enriching summer experience through career exploration in Discovery. She also assists with the implementation of SPM Policy, including supporting and educating the VCU community about the SPM Policy and resources.
King's work in higher education focuses on student leadership development within the realm of student activities. She previously served as the assistant director of Student Activities at the University of Virginia from 2013-2016. In that role, she created consistent, late-night programming options for UVA students, helped launch the Green Dot initiative on campus (designed to reduce power-based personal violence) and created leadership development opportunities for student organizations.
Prior to arriving at UVA, King worked in student activities, advising student organizations and student leaders at Florida State University. Before graduate school, King worked with summer outreach programs designed to support first generation college students at the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement at Florida State University.
