Community Engagement Institute

The Division of Community Engagement hosts VCU's Community Engagement Institute annually in May. The Institute brings together those who share a commitment to solving today's grand challenges through community-academic partnerships.

This free, two-day event provides faculty members, community partners and graduate students the opportunity to build a fundamental understanding of the principles of community engagement in the 21century.

2019 Institute (Register Here)

The 2019 Community Engagement Institute (#CEI2019) will be held May 14 and 15 on the Monroe Park Campus. Through interactive workshops, Institute participants will explore the power and potential of university-community partnerships from a variety of angles, focusing on best practices for community-engaged teaching and research.

Sessions will focus on deepening understanding of the role of community engagement in higher education in the 21st century, reimagining traditional teaching and research practices and developing awareness of service-learning and community-engaged research. Participants will build skills around initiating and sustaining community-academic partnerships, as well assessing and communicating the work of such partnerships. Networking opportunities and conversation time are included in both days.

Speakers:

The Community Engagement Institute draws on local expertise and energy, enabling participants to learn directly from the faculty and community members who are engaged in this work. The 2019 Institute will open with a keynote address from Gerry Moeller, M.D., director of the Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research, who is harnessing community-academic partnerships to move the needle on the opioid epidemic. Additional speakers for 2019 will be announced in the coming weeks.

Feedback from participants:

Attendees from previous Institutes have shared comments including:

  • “I really appreciate this institute. I learned a lot! I'm not sure what I knew before, but the institute showed me that it wasn't much. I feel much better prepared now to begin this work.”
  • “I could not believe this was free! Coming from a smaller organization, it is great to have such fantastic and affordable options for personal and professional development.”
  • “Thank you for all of the wonderful guest speakers. Each of them touched upon different areas of community engagement that were helpful (and even inspiring).”
