Strategic Plan

In 2021, Center for Community Engagement and Impact launched a new strategic plan to build on VCU's success as a community-engaged institution while finding ways to further realize authentic community-university collaboration.

Our strategic plan aligns with the themes of VCU's strategic plan, Quest 2025: Together We Transform.

The CEI guiding principles are those ideals and beliefs that provide us constant direction on developing impactful community engagement and high-quality university-community partnerships. They are the lens through which we actualize VCU’s mission and form the foundation of our work.

We will

  • Build upon a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion that seeks, engages, and values diverse perspectives and experiences.   
  • Support university-community partnerships founded on mutual benefit and trust.
  • Communicate in ways that are equitable, transparent and accessible, honor listening and learning.
  • Recognize and embrace the knowledge, skills and experience that university and community members contribute to the pursuit of common goals.
  • Strive for excellence, spark innovation and partner to make a positive impact together.      

Our role:

The Center for Community Engagement and Impact provides expertise for high-quality community engagement while leveraging university resources to address critical community-identified needs. The center is VCU’s central hub to convene and coordinate authentic community-university partnerships that strengthen research, student learning, and faculty success.

Goal 1: Integrate community engagement throughout VCU

Infuse and inspire the principles and practices of authentic community engagement across the institution to positively impact student success, teaching and scholarship.

Supports Quest 2025 themes: Theme I: Student Success; Theme II: National Prominence; Theme III: Collective Urban and Regional Transformation; Theme IV: Diversity Driving Excellence

  • Build capacity to support university-wide integration of high-quality community-engaged research, scholarship and teaching.
  • Highlight exceptional VCU community engagement programs and people through targeted communications efforts that elevate community-engaged work on the university, state and national level.
  • Align VCU community engagement efforts to promote student success, especially focused on underrepresented minorities.
  • Expand experiential learning opportunities and grow high-impact practices through service-learning that prepare students to become civic-minded and community-engaged citizens.

Goal 2: Serve as the central point of access for VCU and the community

Serve as the centralized hub to coordinate mutually beneficial partnerships and expand access and utilization of university resources to address community-identified needs.

  • Develop and manage a central point of entry at VCU for community access and serve as a coordinating hub to connect faculty, staff and community partners. 
  • Become a central resource for university-wide data collection, analysis and reporting related to community engagement and the VCU anchor mission.
  • Strategically leverage VCU’s core competencies to actualize its Anchor mission and core competencies in education, health equity and community wealth-building. 
  • Expand volunteer service participation and broaden employee engagement in the community.

Goal 3: Elevate community voice

Include and represent community perspective to inform university policy, programs and practices.

  • Develop a comprehensive stakeholder outreach and engagement plan to strengthen mutually beneficial partnerships and respond to community needs.
  • Solicit community perspective and elevate to VCU leadership for inclusion in administrative planning.
  • Leverage programmatic assets to strengthen community participation in VCU place-based initiatives.

Goal 4: Achieve national distinction for VCU

Leverage VCU’s diverse assets and urban setting to contribute to the field of community engagement and position VCU as a preeminent national model.

  • Secure new and maintain existing national recognitions in community engagement.
  • Identify and coordinate university participation in national community engagement associations to showcase areas of interdisciplinary strengthen and community engagement.
